Barking dogs don’t bite… it is said…But if a dog keeps barking as if there is no tomorrow, you have a problem there. The persistent sound of the barking becomes irritating and tough to contend with. Most neighbors make their disapproval felt and you wish there was some way your dog can be trained to bark less….
Barking may express a variety of sentiments. It could be because of Separation Anxiety. It could also be due to
All these problems can be managed by making the dog more comfortable, not leaving him alone for too long, giving him his meals and water at the right times and getting him checked up by the vet.
besides that, here are some simple means to stop the undue barking. Next time he barks, let him for a few seconds. Then place a hand gently on his muzzle and say “Stop!” or “Quiet!” in a firm tone. If he stops barking, praise him.
You can also try this:
Fill up a spray bottle with water. When you want him to stop barking, say “Quiet!” just as you squirt water on his face. If he stops at once, give him the PTP treatment. (What is a PTP treatment? It is nothing but being nice to your dog with Pats, Treats and Praises! ) Repeat the spraying, again and again, until he knows exactly when to stop barking.
If this doesn’t work, get him a silencing collar, after consulting the vet.
