Did you know that a dachshund can have a smooth, long haired or a wire haired coat?
For each coat type there is a different way you brush and groom it.
For the smooth coated dachshund
- Use a damp cloth and give him a gentle rub down regularly
- Remove dead hairs from the coat wearing rubber gloves, once a week
- Brush the coat on alternate days
- Bathe him once a month
In the picture below, the dog on the left is a smooth haired dachshund.
For the long haired dachshund
- Perform a weekly head to tail thorough brush down
- As soon as you see protruding hairs from his paws, trim them
- Be alert to any signs of ear infection in your dog, as long haired dachshunds are prone to it
- For this, check ears and keep them clean of food particles that may stick on while the dog eats. Clean ears regularly
- Brush and comb the long haired dachshund after his weekly bath
- Use a pin brush for brushing
- Detangle and soften the coat with superior quality doggie care products
- If it is tough for you to manage any aspect of grooming, avail the service of a professional groomer
For the wire haired dachshund
- A little extra effort is needed to keep this particular type of dog looking trim and well groomed
- Take him twice a year for a professional coat trimming
- The coat must be plucked once every 4 or 6 months
- Do you know how to pluck? if not, learn how to do it from a professional groomer. he will be glad to teach you how
- The wire haired dachshund’s coat should not be clipped, it should only be stripped or plucked
