Every dog owner tries his or her best to keep the pet safe and secure. Yet there are times, when in spite of your best efforts a dog may go astray.
Rather than grieve over a lost dog and spend heart breaking hours in trying to find him, it is better to take adequate steps to avoid such a misfortune.
There are two important rules of dog safety. The first golden rule is that you should train the puppy. Teach him thoroughly to obey the basic and crucial commands like “sit”, “heel”, “stay”, and “no”.
The second significant step you need to take is to have him micro-chipped. The micro ship can be inserted into the neck folds of the dog and is as tiny as a grain of rice. The chip is scan worthy and will help trace your dog anywhere, anytime.
Here are some more guidelines that help keep your dog safe.
- If you are not able to effectively train him, enrol him in a puppy training school
- Keep the dog on leash whenever he is taken out
- Add an id slip to his collar that has on it your address and contact number
- Fence the house, preferably with a chain link fence. Add electrical wiring to the upper level of the fence and chicken wire to the lower. The former keeps away trespassers while the latter is effective against your dog digging his way out
- If you are taking him out in a crate, ensure that it is securely fastened
- Avoid allowing the dog to roam freely in the yard when you are not at home. This will (1) attract dog thieves (2) encourage the dog to explore the sounds and smells outside (3) provoke children and other animals, to tease the dog
In case your dog goes missing, do not despair. Here are some tips to look for him
- Call his name and whistle for him as often as possible
- Armed with his picture, ask the neighbours, especially children, if they have spotted the dog
- If not found, widen your area of enquiry and ask more people and visit more houses with the picture of your dog
- Look for him near ponds and lakes in the neighborhood
- Put up eye-catching posters to request the public to help you search for the dog
- Place an ad in the local papers and furnish your complete contact details
- Announce an award you can afford for the finder
- Place a request with the vet to be on the lookout for the dog
- Place a request with SPCA and all local voluntary animal organizations, in case someone has brought him over
