JRT - A Small Bundle of High Energy

Thursday, February 19th, 2009

The Jack Russell  Terrier (JRT), is a small, basically white dog, whose ancestors were fine fox hunters.   This is a sturdy and fearless little dog that stands about 10 to 15 inches tall.  This predominantly white dog has black or tan markings and boasts of an elegant bearing in a  compact body.

Just because he is small, you cannot assume that the JRT is a lap dog, content to spend his time by your side. If you treat him as a lap dog, there are quite a few chances that this little bundle of energy may become belligerent and indifferent to your love and care.

This is a highly energetic dog that has to be trained expertly to toe the line.  Many of these terriers suffer from a “Napoleon Complex”, a trait that makes a JRT take on dogs double his size!   Lack of exercise can make him fidgety and the consequenses can be seen in your chewed off shoes, destroyed mats and carpets and trampled gardens.

This dog  excels in agility and flyball challenges, is exceptionally friendly and loyal and makes a wonderful pet.  However,  the JRT also tends to be stubborn and unresponsive to training.

It makes sense to seek the help of a professional trainer if you have any trouble in training him.  Remember that the JRT is a big dog in a small body and needs the right amount of exercise and mental stimulation to keep him out of mischief and to avoid making him feel restless.

Adopt a JRT if you and other members of your family love to spend a lot of time outdoors.  Make your pet  happy by keeping him in a home where there are huge wide spaces for him to explore and run around in.
