4 Reasons Why People Prefer to Adopt Adult Dogs from Rescue Shelters

Thursday, January 22nd, 2009

When you adopt a dog from a rescue shelter, provide a loving home for a dog that would otherwise have been put to sleep.  But most people prefer taking home an adult dog rather than a puppy from a rescue shelter.  Why is this?

Puppies are not easily adopted from rescue shelters because people feel

  1. A puppy in a recue center contracts communicable diseases from the other dogs there faster, because his immune system is not as strong as that of an adult dog
  2. The fact that a puppy reaches a shelter implies that something is not too right, as no responsible breeder would have a puppy that has to be sent to a shelter.  This could imply that the puppy has a genetic or behavioral flaw
  3. Any other reason for the puppy to be there also confirms that the little dog must have had more than its share of emotional/physical/mental trauma.  This would unfortunately influence the dog’s temperament that is yet to develop
  4. There is no knowing what kind of disposition your dog will have when he is fully grown. Remember that a dog’s basic temperament is determined by his genetics.  A faulty gene make-up may deliver your dog immune to your training and care and he may grow up to be belligerent, aggressive, hyper active, distressed and uncontrollable.

But what is your opinion?  Don’t you think every little dog has a right to good living?  Should he not be loved and cared for to make his life more beautiful? Does he deserve to be put to sleep so young?   We welcome you to share your views on this page.
